History
St.
John Ambulance has been attending to the first aid needs of Bermuda since 1894.
The Order of St. John is the oldest Order of Chivalry, and oldest (surviving)
charitable organization, dating back over 900 years. The order was incorporated
by a Royal Charter in 1888, and St. John's Gate, England is the headquarters of
the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.
The
insignia used to signify the organization is known as the Maltese Cross. Its
four arms stand for "Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude",
and the eight points for the eight Beatitudes. The unicorns and lions, granted
by Queen Victoria, show that it is a royal order.
St.
John continues to adapt, and improve itself as the community which it serves
changes.
